How to Clean a Mop Properly and Keep It Hygienic

Have you ever noticed a bad smell coming from your mop? Or maybe it leaves streaks instead of a clean finish? The problem might not be your floor—it could be your dirty mop head. A mop full of bacteria and grime won’t clean properly, and worse, it could spread dirt around your home.

But don’t worry! With the right cleaning routine, you can keep your mop fresh, hygienic, and effective for longer.

Why Cleaning your Mop is essential

A dirty mop is a breeding ground for bacteria, mould, and unpleasant odours. If you don’t clean it regularly, instead of removing dirt from your floors, you’ll just be spreading it around. Keeping your mop clean ensures:

  • Better cleaning results – A fresh mop leaves floors streak-free.
  • Longer mop lifespan – Regular maintenance prevents damage.
  • Healthier home – Stops the spread of germs and bacteria.

How to Clean a Mop Step by Step

1. Rinse after every use

Right after mopping, rinse your mop thoroughly under warm running water. This helps remove excess dirt and cleaning solution. For spin mops and spray mops, make sure to wring out as much water as possible.

2. Wash with soap and warm water

Once a week, give your mop a deep clean. Fill a bucket with warm  water and mild detergent. Swirl the mop around for a few minutes, then rinse thoroughly.

If you have a Vileda mop, your mop head will be machine washable. You should do a proper hand wash or machine wash once a week.

For steam mops, such as the Vileda Steam Mop Plus, remove the microfibre pad and wash it according to the manufacturer’s instructions—the Vileda steam mop refill is machine washable!

3. Dry properly to prevent mould

Never store a wet mop! Always wring it out completely and let it air dry in a well-ventilated area. Hanging it upside down is ideal to avoid a damp, musty smell.

4. Replace mop heads

Even with proper care, mop heads wear out over time. If your microfibre mop or string mop looks frayed, discoloured, or has a persistent odour, it’s time for a replacement. We recommend replacing your mop head every 6 months to maintain cleaning power. You can purchase your brand new Vileda mop head here!
